This virtual walk will take us to three different museums and beyond. Our starting point is VIDA AMERICANA at the Whitney Museum, which investigates the influence of Mexican muralists on modern artists in the US, who were inspired by the theme of celebrating the common man, but also the concept of public mural art in general. The Met commissioned work by Kent Monkman, currently on view in the main lobby, paintings that question historical perspectives, colonialism and, like Mexican muralists, offer an alternate view point. JR, who just had a solo show at the Brooklyn Museum, also gives a voice to the people, even literally, and his photo-based murals bring people together and help breaking down barriers. We will include other related works on view in our NYC streets as well.
