The longest war fought by New Yorkers in the 19th century was not the Civil War, which lasted a mere four years. It wasn’t the Spanish American War, either, which began in 1898. It was the New York City Milk War, an ongoing conflict pitting business against health, farmers against consumers, bottlers against unions, distributers against each other, and round and round. This war would continue, off and on, for almost fifty years, leaving us a grand physical legacy on our streets today, as well as enduring cultural icons. This tour with author and preservationist Suzanne Spellen is the story of those conflicts, illustrated by the buildings, people and places where those battles took place, from upstate through the five boroughs. You will never look at your moo juice in the same way again.
