P.S. 64: Immigrant School Innovator and Latinx Culture Leader

Janes Walk

Led By Village Preservation

In 1998, New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani sold former Public School 64, then home to the Charas-El Bohio Community and Cultural Center, to a developer, despite opposition from the building’s occupants and the surrounding community. This Urban Archive story traces the long history of PS 64, from a public school, to a vibrant community and cultural center, to a site mired in controversy to this day.
