Shaping Our City: To Queens! Long Island City and Sunnyside

Shaping Our City is a more or less chronological series devoted to the history and development of architecture in New York City.

With Matt Postal

New planning principles were developed and introduced in Queens at the start of the 20th century. This walking tour focuses on the area around Sunnyside Yards, where varied kinds of working class housing were erected. Led by architectural historian Matt Postal, we’ll view a colorful stretch of Mathews Model Flats (one of many in the borough) and Sunnyside Gardens, an early attempt to create a “garden city” in the United States. En route, we’ll also visit Phipps Garden Apartments, featuring fine brickwork and spacious courtyards, as well as other artful structures from the Art Deco era.
