[In-person tour] With the introduction of the IRT subway in 1904, high-rise construction pushed north. Concentrated in the vicinity of Times Square and Grand Central Terminal, these buildings are notable for their distinctive massing and remarkable ornamentation. Designed in a succession of popular styles, from neo-Renaissance to Art Deco, highlights include the often-ignored World Tower, the splendidly restored American Radiator Building, and the crowd-pleasing Chrysler Building. Led by architecture historian Matt Postal.
