Sunnyside Deco

20th Century Architecture in Queens

With Matt Postal

This vibrant Queens community contains many Art Deco buildings, mostly apartment houses from the 1930s. Built on speculation for middle class tenants, they were designed by lesser-known architects who practiced outside of nearby Manhattan, including Benjamin Braunstein, Kavy & Kavovitt, and John Ricca. Our route includes several commercial buildings and Celtic Park, one of the last apartment complexes built by City and Suburban Homes, which pioneered the construction of decent low-cost housing in the first decades of the 20th century.
