The Future as Past: Raymond Hood in Midtown

Janes Walk

Led By Shan Jayakumar

The work of architect Raymond Hood (1881-1934), while striving to be original and modern, nevertheless embraces the past. Using stylistic idioms from neo-Gothic to Art Deco to Modern, his designs helped fashion the Midtown skyscraper as a corporate icon. With a thematic focus, this walk will consider three of his prominent buildings in Midtown Manhattan and their ongoing influence on architecture and real estate developments such as Hudson Yards.
