The High Bridge in Art: A Live Virtual Walking Tour Connecting the Past and Present

Janes Walk

Led By Duane Bailey-Castro

Join an Instagram Live walking tour atop New York City’s oldest surviving span, the High Bridge. Built in 1848 to provide New Yorkers with safe and reliable drinking water, the High Bridge became one of the city’s most famous tourist destinations attracting painters and photographers. Rehabilitated and reopened in 2015 after decades of neglect, the High Bridge once again has inspired local artists and tourists eager to capture this unique and enduring engineering marvel spanning the Harlem River.

Historical and artistic images of the High Bridge will be presented. The High Bridge Water Tower, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year and reopened to the public in November 2021, will be identified. The presenter will also discuss his own approach to capturing this iconic structure in his photography.
