The Lost Theaters of Bay Ridge

Janes Walk

Led By Daniel Pecoraro

Across Bay Ridge, what are now gyms, chain stores, and Asian supermarkets were once movie theaters, with only one of these cinemas (the Alpine) remaining. This tour will not only uncover the history of these buildings but also shed more light on neighborhood history and the story of Brooklyn at the movies.

Accessibility

The tour starts near the Bay Ridge-95th Street station at the end of the R train. The R train is running as a shuttle on weekends until May 23 (including Jane's Walk weekend), with R trains terminating at 9th Avenue on the D train, and shuttle buses running along 4th Avenue between 36th and 95th Streets. Folks might want to plan accordingly in terms of timing and considering taking the bus (B8, B16, B37, B63, or B70) if coming from points north. The tour will include an incline at 7th Avenue and 67th Street (what becomes Eirik Place), but is otherwise on level ground. The tour will end nearest to the Fort Hamilton Parkway (N) station, and off the B16 bus (and not far from the B4, B9, and B64 buses). The closest accessible station to the conclusion of the tour is 62nd Street-New Utrecht Avenue (D/N).
