Unpacking The Meatpacking District: A 360 Degree View from Gansevoort Plaza

Janes Walk

SOLD OUT

Led By Jacquelyn Ottman

Stroll the Meatpacking District from the vantage point of Gansevoort Plaza with Jacquie Ottman, whose family’s storied meat purveying business parallels that of the Meatpacking District itself.

This magical—and most unusual—intersection of five Manhattan blocks spans over four centuries of NYC transformation. Start this part-history, part-memoir tour learning about the Lenape Trail, enjoy architectural highlights including a stunning example of Arts & Crafts architecture built by the Astors, and imagine this busy Belgian block-paved intersection during the days when meat hung from screeching metal canopies early in the morning. Get answers to questions such as “What was here before the glam and the glitz? Before Florent and Pastis?” from someone who experienced the District during its heyday in the 1970s, first hand.

Accessibility
Highly accessible since we will be confined to the Gansevoort Plaza area. Participants should be comfortable walking on Belgian block lined street pavement. (Optional walk for ad-hoc lunch together afterwards at Gansevoort Market at Ninth Avenue and 14th Street.)
Location Information
