West Harlem Revealed

Janes Walk

Led By William Morache AND Yuien Chin, Architectural Historian & Consultant for the West Harlem Community Preservation Organization

Join the West Harlem Community Preservation Organization and Harlem One Stop in touring Manhattan’s next great historic district, West Harlem. Spanning centuries, West Harlem has played the roles of forested hunting ground, Revolutionary War encampment, suburban retreat, dense urban neighborhood, refuge for Harlem’s Black elite, and landing zone for incoming New Yorkers. Come explore the neighborhood’s Neo-Grec tenements, Queen Anne row houses, Renaissance Revival apartment buildings, and more. Bring your walking shoes as we tour along Amsterdam, Broadway, and Riverside Drive between West 135th Street and Trinity Cemetery.

The West Harlem Historic District is expected to be listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places later this year, pending review.

Accessibility

The walk will take place on public sidewalks and should be generally accessible without stairs or steep pathways. The TBD route will likely be a little over a mile. The area is easily accessed by public transit.
