Where We Worked: Vanished Manhattan Dance Studios

Janes Walk

Led By Lise Brenner

During the 1980’s the ABC Carpet Building housed 3 of NYC’s major modern dance companies: Limon, Erick Hawkins and Nikolais/Lewis. The block of 18th Street that City Bakery is on once had a number of smaller studios, some live/work, all intimately connected to the lives and works of contemporary dancers through the end of the 20th century. This walk will include some talking, a scavenger hunt based on key principals of modern and post-modern choreography, and a post-walk exchange of discoveries and observations. Don’t miss this chance to explore the working world of a made-in-NYC form that changed dance and art around the globe–and to have another reason to celebrate the versatility and beauty of New York City’s commercial architecture.
