Whitney Walking Tour

Janes Walk

Led By Jane Carey, Director of Community and Government Affairs AND Cade Hobbick

The Whitney Museum of American Art’s building may be new, but its surrounding neighborhood’s past is long and storied, filled with unexpected twists and turns. From the many Greenwich Village artists who came through the Museum’s first home on 8th Street, to the varied artistic projects along the Hudson River Piers, the history of the Whitney brings together the creative communities that shaped it. Join a Whitney Museum Educator or Teaching Fellow to learn about the vibrant and varied cultural highlights within just a few blocks of the Whitney.

Tours will meet outside the entrance of the Museum. The meeting place will be marked with physical signage.

Outdoor events hosted by the Whitney are weather dependent and subject to cancellation.

Accessibility

The walk will start at the museum and cover several blocks, with a longer option or a shorter option, depending on time, weather, or the walking capacity and preferences of the group on the day. All should be wheelchair accessible, though some sidewalks are uneven. Starting from the west corner of the museum, they will head south on West street, turning at the first block onto Jane street, and then south on Washington. On Washington, they will either continue south several blocks or one block, as the two options, then across and back up Washington to the base of the High Line. They will go up onto the High Line to finish, but there is a wheelchair accessible elevator for anyone who needs.

Location Information

RSVP is required and capacity is limited. Meeting location, ending location, and directions will be provided via email before walk date.
