Jane’s Walk NYC is Back May 6-8

Walk submissions will be accepted through March 31

February 14, 2022

A Note from the Jane’s Walk NYC Team at MAS:

Throughout the challenges of 2020 and 2021, many of us at MAS have found ourselves inspired in new and deeper ways by the mission of our annual Jane’s Walk festival. This volunteer-led celebration of urban life, inspired by Jane Jacobs, has always been a time to come together and share our love for this city.

This year, Jane’s Walk NYC will feature a variety of virtual and socially distanced formats, including in-person guided group walks, self-guided in-person walks, virtual talks, social media activations, and more. We are excited to safely celebrate the city by offering in-person guided group walks for the first time since 2019. Through a collection of in-person and virtual experiences, we cannot wait to generate conversation about the city and celebrate its vibrant past, present, and future!

MAS is here to help you dream up your virtual, self-guided, or guided group Jane’s Walk. While you can submit a walk about almost any topic under the sun, here are a few ideas to help inspire you:

  • Celebrate the small businesses, mutual aid networks, and community groups that have shown up for our city across the past two years
  • Provide a break from screen time by encouraging people to explore the great outdoors of New York with a self-guided walk or run
  • Promote inter-city dialogue by hosting conversations with other cities around the world

Who can lead a Jane’s Walk? You can! Our submission form closed on Thursday, March 31st. For any questions about your submission, email janeswalknyc@mas.org.

Please note: As a safety precaution, MAS will ask walk attendees to remain masked for any guided group walks, to practice social distancing, and to have proof of vaccination on-hand. For the first time, MAS will be requiring registration, capping attendance at 30 people, and only holding walks outdoors for safety reasons.

About Jane’s Walk NYC

Jane’s Walk was founded as a way to celebrate the life and legacy of urban activist, Jane Jacobs, who believed in the power of individuals to influence their city. It now takes place in over 200 cities worldwide, with Jane’s Walk NYC, presented by the Municipal Art Society of New York, as the largest of these festivals. What started as a handful of walks in 2011 has since grown into a weekend of collective neighborhood storytelling featuring hundreds of walks online and across all five boroughs.
