JACQUELINE KENNEDY ONASSIS MEDAL HONOREE JON BATISTE

Jon Batiste is one of history’s most brilliant, prolific, and accomplished musicians. Batiste studied and received both a BA and MFA at the world-renowned Juilliard School in New York City. From 2015 until this August, Batiste was bandleader and musical director of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS. In 2018, he received a Grammy nomination for Best American Roots Performance and in 2020, he received two Grammy nods for the albums: Chronology Of A Dream: Live At The Village Vanguard and Meditations, with Cory Wong. In 2020, he won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for the Disney/Pixar film Soul, an honor he shared with fellow composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Jon’s work on Soul also earned him a Golden Globe, BAFTA, NAACP Image Award, and a Critic’s Choice Award. He is the second Black composer in history, after legendary jazz musician Herbie Hancock, to win an Academy Award for composition. Batiste’s latest studio album, We Are, was released in March 2021 to overwhelming critical acclaim. Subsequently, he was nominated for eleven Grammys across seven different categories, a first in Grammy history. He went on to win five of those Grammys including Album of the Year.

Jon Batiste’s efforts over the past two years to give a voice to the cause of civil and racial justice have resonated in New York City and around the country.  His “We Are” campaign shed light on Black Lives Matter and issues of systemic racism through concerts and marches. And Batiste’s presence across New York City as the pandemic has played out—taking his joyful music to the streets—has been uplifting and inspiring. Batiste helped make New York more resilient and consequently better able to face the challenges ahead as we envision a richer, stronger post-COVID New York.

JACQUELINE KENNEDY ONASSIS MEDAL HONOREE Clara Wu Tsai

Clara Wu Tsai is a businesswoman, investor, and philanthropist with a lifelong interest in advancing knowledge, culture, and the arts for the benefit of society. Through the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation, Clara pursues philanthropic investments that advance knowledge, innovation, creativity in the arts, and equality by working with global partners to focus on the translation of new knowledge into practical applications with human, environmental, or social impact.

In 2020 the Foundation established a Social Justice Fund focused on economic mobility in Brooklyn, and Clara is a founding partner of the REFORM Alliance, which seeks reforms in the criminal justice system. In 2021, she was recognized as a “Champion of Justice” by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice for her work on social and racial justice.

In science and technology, the Foundation supports the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance, the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute at Stanford University, and the Wu Tsai Institute at Yale University for understanding human cognition.

In December 2021, Clara joined Stanford University’s Board of Trustees. She also serves on the Boards of Trustees for New York Presbyterian Hospital and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and on the Advisory Board of the Institute for Protein Design at the University of Washington. She was an executive producer of Into the Okavango, a 2018 conservation documentary, and Blue Bayou, a 2021 drama.

Clara is Governor of the New York Liberty (WNBA) and she and her husband are also the owners of the Brooklyn Nets (NBA) and the San Diego Seals (NLL). Previously, Clara was General Manager of the Hong Kong operations of Taobao, China’s largest online shopping website, and a Vice President at American Express in New York and Hong Kong. Clara holds a BA in International Relations and a MA in International Policy Studies from Stanford University, and a MBA from Harvard University.

JACQUELINE KENNEDY ONASSIS MEDAL HONOREE Joe Tsai

Joe Tsai is a co-founder and executive vice chairman of Alibaba Group, a global Internet technology company based in China. His career at Alibaba spans over 20 years, during which he was the company’s chief financial officer and oversaw strategic investments. Joe serves on the boards of directors of Alibaba Group and its financial services affiliate, Ant Group.

Joe is Governor of the Brooklyn Nets (NBA) and the New York Liberty (WNBA) and Chairman of the teams’ home arena Barclays Center. He owns two professional indoor lacrosse teams, based in San Diego and Las Vegas, respectively, in the National Lacrosse League. Joe also has investments in the outdoor professional lacrosse league, Premier Lacrosse League, and Los Angeles FC of Major League Soccer.

Through the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation, Joe and his wife are active philanthropists supporting initiatives in education, research, criminal justice reform, economic mobility, the arts, and humanitarian relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. Joe is a founding board member of The Asian American Foundation (TAAF), a non-profit launched in 2021 that provides resources to Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities to mobilize against hate and discrimination and build the infrastructure to improve AAPI advocacy, power, and representation.

Joe is a member of the J.P. Morgan International Council, EXOR Partners Council, and International Advisory Council of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. He is a trustee of The Lawrenceville School.

Prior to founding Alibaba Group, Joe practiced tax law as an associate with Sullivan & Cromwell LLP in New York from 1990 to 1993 and was responsible for Asian private equity investments for Investor AB of Sweden’s Wallenberg family from 1995 to 1999. He is a graduate of Yale College (BA ’86) and Yale Law School (JD ’90).

JACQUELINE KENNEDY ONASSIS MEDAL HONOREE Earl D. Weiner

Earl D. Weiner was a partner in Sullivan & Cromwell’s Corporate & Finance Group from 1976 to 2006 and is now Senior Counsel. After retiring as a partner, he served as an independent director of the AllianceBernstein funds. In addition to pursuing his legal career, Earl has been a driving force in New York City philanthropy for more than four decades, helping to shape theater, public space, and civic life across the city.

Brooklyn has been a primary focus. Earl is a resident of Brooklyn Heights, where he settled in 1968 with his late wife Gina Ingoglia, a prolific writer, illustrator, landscape designer, and philanthropist in her own right. He is chairman emeritus of Brooklyn Botanic Garden and today serves as a trustee and member of the executive committee of the Garden, as well as of historic Green-Wood Cemetery and The Brooklyn Hospital Center. He also is chairman emeritus of the Brooklyn Heights Association.

Earl’s love for theater began in college dramatics and has continued throughout his life. Earl is chairman of the board of The Acting Company and immediate past chairman and current trustee of TDF (Theatre Development Fund). The Acting Company is a professional, national touring repertory company that for 50 years has helped develop young actors and bring quality theater to students and adults around the country. TDF, best known for operating the iconic TKTS discount ticket booth in Times Square, is dedicated to making live theater and dance possible for public school children, families with children on the autism spectrum, veterans, and others who otherwise might not have this experience.

Since 2007, he has been a director and the general counsel of the Municipal Art Society of New York and chairs the organization’s Law Committee. As one of MAS’s longest serving board members, his impact on its work, its governance, and its advocacy on behalf of New York City neighborhoods has been immeasurable.

Earl received his undergraduate degree from Dickinson College, where he is an emeritus trustee, and his law degree from Yale Law School.  He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1965.

For more than 125 years, the Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) has worked to educate and inspire New Yorkers to engage in the betterment of our city. As a nonprofit advocacy organization with a high profile and proven track record, MAS mobilizes diverse allies to act on issues that affect New York from sidewalk to skyline. Through planning, policy, and preservation, each of our advocacy initiatives seeks to create a just, livable environment for over 8.5 million New Yorkers. We also strive to provide replicable urban policies and practices for the benefit of other cities throughout the nation and the world.

Due to the efforts of MAS since our founding, iconic landmarks such as Grand Central Terminal, Radio City Music Hall, Jefferson Market Courthouse, and St. Bartholomew’s Church were saved from demolition. Other notable accomplishments have included preserving the Garment District and lights of Times Square and advocating for construction of Rockefeller Center and the Second Avenue Subway. Our advocacy has also led to the creation of the New York Planning Commission, the Public Design Commission, the Landmarks Preservation Commission, as well as the conservation of more than 50 works of public art. MAS was also instrumental in the founding of important civic organization such as the Public Art Fund, the New York Landmarks Conservancy, P.S. 1, the Historic Districts Council, the Park Avenue Armory Conservancy, and the Waterfront Alliance.
