Maria Martins, Brazilian Artist and Muse

With Sylvia Laudien-Meo

[Virtual tour] The war years brought waves of European artists to NYC, and Maria Martins joined this passionate, creative, mostly Surrealist community arriving from Brazil. The idea of exoticism, the fascination with non Western cultures and sexual freedom was on all artists’ minds at the time and Maria, as she called herself, fit right in, creating innovative, sensuous sculptures and prints. She also had a romantic relationship with Marcel Duchamp, who cast her body for some of his most exciting late piece, Etants Donnéés. Join art historian Sylvia Laudien-Meo for this exploration.
