1950s NYC Street Photography

With Sylvia Laudien-Meo

[Virtual tour] Featuring: Andreas Feininger, Robert Frank, Roy de Carava, Gordon Parks, William Klein, Bruce Davidson. Having grown up at the Bauhaus School in Germany, Feininger was most familiar with experimental photography when he started working in New York, and Robert Frank also brought his European perspective to the US, travelling across the country by car, capturing a portrait of Americans who were struggling during the post WW II years. With the era of photo magazines, photography became an indispensable part of storytelling. Photographs were no longer illustrations of narratives, but equal parts. Photographers often followed a story for an extensive time span, so their images give an in-depth understanding of situations and people portrayed. These artists were very personally invested in their work and their commitment and passion is tangible in each of their images, whether they worked on their own or in collaboration with writers. Their stories will take us to Harlem, Brooklyn and throughout the metropolis, to the shores and diners, underground and into people’s homes. Curated by Sylvia Laudien-Meo.
