Advocacy Update: Penn Station
Amtrak announced an ambitious timeline and goals for the revitalization of Penn Station and a Federal study of ways to accommodate local and regional capacity growth including through-running. As a member of the New York Penn Station Working Advisory Group, MAS is encouraged to know that the plan will include not just a new signature structure, but an improved transit experience with increased efficiency that will relieve congestion. This project should strive to enhance the public realm in and around Penn Station and ensure the station can accommodate the growing demand expected after the Hudson Tunnel project is complete. While MAS has long advocated for moving Madison Square Garden, we’ve seen that the station can also be transformed, and public realm improved with MSG in place. We look forward to seeing the proposals and hope they include innovative and thoroughly researched solutions for this complex transit hub.
