About the Montauk Club

Designed by Francis H. Kimball and completed in 1891, the building’s unique exterior decorative features employ the vocabulary of the Venetian Gothic combined with motifs from the Native American Montauk people. The building is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful terra cotta-based architectural works in New York City. The Club is located in the Park Slope Historic District. In 2017, the Montauk Club and Bone/Levine Architects received the Municipal Art Society’s MASterworks Award for Best Restoration.

About the 125th Anniversary Salon Series

For 125 years, the Municipal Art Society of New York has worked to educate and inspire New Yorkers to engage in the betterment of our city. As a non-profit advocacy organization, MAS mobilizes diverse allies to focus on issues that affect our city from sidewalk to skyline. Through three core campaign areas, MAS protects New York’s legacy spaces, encourages thoughtful planning and urban design, and fosters complete neighborhoods across the five boroughs.

As we celebrate our 125th Anniversary, MAS is hosting a series of intimate dinner salons. We invite our supporters to share special evenings in unique, iconic places, with lively discussions about topics central to New York life, enhanced by great food and drink.

The Municipal Art Society Is Founded

The Municipal Art Society (MAS) is established on March 22, 1893, by Richard Morris Hunt and other civic activists, with a founding mission to beautify New York with public art. Throughout its first century, the organization expanded its mission to include the city’s buildings, streetscapes, and public spaces, with the aim of bringing the voice of the public into the debates that impact the lives of New Yorkers.
