Greener Corridors Part 2: Built for the Automobile

Mobility Challenges and Opportunities of NYC's Most Car-Centric Streets

Earlier this year, MAS introduced its Greener Corridors initiative, which seeks to understand the challenges and communicate the opportunities to improve the most physically expansive and divisive arterial thoroughfares in New York City. These types of thoroughfares have been criticized for their road designs that prioritize moving large volumes of through-traffic at the expense of pedestrian and cyclist safety, public health, and walkable street environments that foster a sense of place and belonging.

Built for the Automobile, the second installment in the Greener Corridors article series, takes a critical look at the core function of these thoroughfares (to move through-traffic) and the need to make them safer, more efficient, and reflective of the mobility preferences of the people who live near them.
