Action Alert: Join the Fight for Light

Urge your representatives to be part of our campaign

December 2, 2019

This year on Giving Tuesday, MAS did something a little different. Instead of asking for a donation, we asked you to give us the gift of adding your voice to our newest campaign: Fight for Light. If you didn’t have a chance to join us in our Giving Tuesday push, the action alert is still available for you to use below. Together we can make a difference.

In partnership with New Yorkers for Parks, we released a new report in October titled Bright Ideas, which makes the case for sunlight as an urban planning priority that directly impacts the health, ecology, environment, and economy of our city. Light and air are not fringe amenities; they are essential elements in our urban infrastructure. A city that fails to keep its built and natural environments in balance leaves itself vulnerable to the worst threats facing humanity, from the obesity epidemic to climate change.

Our City elected representatives have the power to put on the path to a brighter future and as a constituent, your voice can make a difference. Use the OneClickPolitics module below to automatically contact your local Council Member by email, social media, and phone and urge them to fight for the recommendations laid out in our report:

  1. Appoint a City-level advocate—Director of the Public Realm—equipped with the staff and resources to monitor, plan, and invest in the health of New York’s open spaces;
  2. Conduct a baseline assessment to refine our policies and set goals for access to sunlight;
  3. Identify populations that are especially vulnerable or historically underrepresented and address their needs first where possible; and
  4. Draft a set of policy proposals that are feasible and applicable within New York City’s unique planning context.

Help us win the fight for light.
